RACHEL extra hard.extra mile.
Rachel is a Gospel hip hop group and masters of the stage…. “On stage, there was a test of stage mastery and performing with a live band. While groups like Rachel have perfected this art…” Buzz, Sunday Nation September 20, 2009.
Rachel is also a 2 time nominee of the Groove Awards group of the year category (2008 and 2009) and Hip Hop song of the year 2009. It’s hip hop group with an African sound. Rachel is made up of Mikii (Michael Wambugu), Sam (Samuel Miring’u) and T’Nain (Warren Lamu). We came together as a group in 2001 while at Daystar University. Back then we were known as UCR (Union of Curtain Raisers). We started out making music using a church keyboard and a PC in the bedroom of a friend. We used his mattress for sound proofing and had to stand very still while recording, to avoid shaking the loose microphone connection! Our first song “MUCHAFU” did relatively well and made it to the Capital FM’s East African Charts Show, where it climbed up to song number seven. As a group and individuals we passed through spiritual, financial and personal challenges that had us take a long break from the mainstream to re-evaluate our act. Then in 2003, we came back as RACHEL.
RACHEL is a metaphor that stands for hard work and excellence, inspired by the story of Jacob’s love life. Jacob worked 7 long years for the woman of his dreams, only to be played by his father in-law. But he did not give up; he worked 7 more years to get what he’d always wanted. Likewise we do not want to settle for something other than the best, in terms of artistic quality, value and what God has for us and our audience. So we are willing to work extra hard and go the extra mile.
